Cat art parody cat prints of
David Hockney's Cat
Surveying Mulholland Drive

See my original painting that interprets how Hockney might have painted his own cat!

If Hockney had had a cat, how do you think he would have painted it?  I borrowed from Hockney's techniques and created an original scene featuring a cat.  Using Hockney's famous style, I painted my interpretation of how he would have portrayed his own cat :-)

This cat art is an art parody of David Hockney's cat that inadvertently inspired the artist's famous California landscapes.  These cat art parody cat prints are part of the Famous Artists' Cats series that shows there is more than one way to view a cat.  Available as cat prints and canvas transfers.

David Hockney's Cat

David Hockney's cat loved to climb up into a particular tree where he
could have a sweeping view of the hills and fields and watch the traffic go by on
Mulholland Drive.  While observing the cat one day, the artist was suddenly
inspired to paint a series of pictures of the cat's view.

(This story is printed in the lower left corner, just below the image. It is laminated separately with the canvas transfer.)

(printed from original watercolor on paper)

"Eve--Thanks so much for sending the David Hockney print in such a timely manner.  I am a David Hockney fan (as well as a huge cat fan), and I would love to be on your mailing list.  Thanks, Mindi"

David Hockney's Cat has a bird's eye view from the mountain crest of the rolling hills, winding road, and colorfully patterned fields below.

These cat prints were originally painted in transparent watercolor.  I'll let you in on a little secret.  It began as a piece of paper that was used to test colors on for other paintings.  You can see this in the variety of shapes and colors near the bottom of the picture that have now become wildflowers on the hillside.  This unplanned placing of color on the paper gives a spontaneous, happy-go-lucky feeling to the painting, and contrasts nicely with the more structured crop lines in the fields.

I saw the potential of this "accident" and knew it had to be left as part of the painting.  "Accidents" occur often in painting, especially with watercolor, and the artist has to go with what is happening.  They frequently work out and add just that extra excitement to the finished piece, as happened here.

I wonder what David Hockney would say if he knew I had given away the inspiration for his landscape paintings.

Do you like David Hockney's landscape with a cat's eye view?  It's like living on top of a hill and looking out of your window and watching your cat seeing the world go by.  Would you prefer it as a print under glass or as a framed canvas?

Garrowby Hill

David Hockney

When the British-born artist moved to California, he began to explore the patterns that emerged in the landscape when viewed from above.  These shapes, vivid colors, and curving roads became incorporated into his distinctive landscape style, which was heavily influenced by the memory of the fields of his home in Yorkshire, England.
