Cat art parody cat prints of
Toru Potii (Three Young Women)
and Gauguin's Cat

See my original painting that interprets how Gauguin might have painted his own cat!

If Gauguin had had a cat, how do you think he would have painted it?  I borrowed from Gauguin's techniques and created an original scene featuring a cat.  Using Gauguin's famous style, I painted my interpretation of how he would have portrayed his own cat :-)

Cat art parody cat prints of a stalking cat in Gauguin's Tahiti painting of three young women.   This cat print from the Famous Artists' Cats series captures the atmosphere of French Polynesia and the antics of the animal life there, as well as the everyday life of its young women.

Gauguin's Cat

Paul Gauguin was seen painting three young Tahitian girls as they enjoyed
passing the time in the shade of a large tree, oblivious to the white dog watching
Gauguin's cat as it almost invisibly stalked a chicken through the tall grass.

(This story is printed in the lower left corner, just below the image. It is laminated separately with the canvas transfers.)

Gauguin's Cat print is being used as the basis for a book cover by the German publishing company, Berlin Verlag.

"What fun! I am so happy to have been told of your site...such an imagination!  Thanks, I'll return often until I've seen everything...Lilah at Windy Nights"

This cat art parody print is not so much about a cat as it is about a different way of life, which was so beautifully captured by Gauguin.  The design of the painting is intriguing.  The style and subject matter are derived from Gauguin, while the composition is based on composites of photographs taken while we were on vacation on the French Polynesian islands of Moorea and Bora Bora.  In this cat painting, we have two groups of three.  There are three young women sitting under the tree and also a triangle of animals, both groups intertwined.  Two separate activities and yet each a part of the other's lives.  Note that the hibiscus flowers are over the girls' right ears, signifying they are not married.

The heat of the French Polynesian island can be felt in the hot golden grasses and the searing yellow sky and the peach-colored coral sands of the beach.  The lush vegetation and distinctive mountain peaks evoke the serenity of this tropical paradise, where life unfolds at a slow pace.

If you've been to this part of the world, you will recognize the landscape and tranquility.  If you have only dreamed of it, let the painting take you there.  Imagine yourself passing by the large shade tree and observing this scene.  Do you feel life slowing down?  Do you feel yourself a part of the peaceful setting?  Can you feel your tension melt away?  Do you need something in your life to relieve your stress?  A sense of calmness is just a click away below.

Painting by Gauguin
Ea Haere Ia Oe?
(Where are you Going?)

Gauguin

Paul Gauguin sought paradise in French Polynesia and a primitivism in his art.  He was a symbolist, who painted ideas, combining imagination and the unconscious.  His Tahitian works were exotic and sumptuous in color.  He captured the brightly patterned costumes of the natives,  the colorful vegetation, and the mystery of their folklore and religious beliefs.
